Adventure Expedition: Discovering the Orridi of the Italian Lakes
An exclusive journey into the geological soul of Italy’s lakes
In Valsassina, the Pioverna stream descends through stratified rocks, narrowing and widening as water accelerates between towering stone walls. The cliffs draw so close they almost touch, opening into an abyss more than sixty meters deep, spanned by a single stone bridge. From the darkness, the torrent re-emerges—wild, white with foam—before surrendering to the calm surface of the lake.
Already in 1821, Giovanni Battista Botolotti described this extraordinary landscape, capturing its primordial grandeur. Today, we know it as an orrido: a gorge sculpted by time, water, and ice.
At Sublime Lakes, with the expert guidance of local speleologists and geologists, we explore these monumental formations connecting many Italian lakes, revealing their oldest, most untamed origins.
What Are the Orridi?
The term orrido comes from Latin horridus: wild, rugged, untamed. These spectacular gorges combine breathtaking beauty with ecological richness, creating unique microclimates that foster mosses and ferns. For this reason, they are often called Italy’s hidden “Grand Canyons.”
Curated Orridi Experiences by Sublime Lakes
Every orrido we showcase is not just a natural destination: it is an adventurous expedition, a deep dive into the geological history of Italy’s lakes.
Orrido di Cunardo – Lake Maggiore / Lake Varese
A unique natural phenomenon: a hydrogeological tunnel 800 meters long with a 53-meter drop. Visitors explore multiple branches via steel chain handrails, navigating a labyrinth of narrow passages to reach the fossil branch, an ancient path carved by water. A truly immersive adventure guided by expert speleologists.

Orrido di Bellano – Lake Como
Formed 15 million years ago by the erosion of the Pioverna stream and the Adda Glacier, this canyon features giant potholes, dark crevices, and evocative caverns. Walkways suspended along the cliff allow visitors to reach the great waterfall upstream. The Ca’ del Diavol, a pentagonal tower perched on the torrent, is now a multimedia museum.
Orrido di Bogn (Zorzino) – Lake Iseo
Locally known as the “Bogn di Zorzino,” it is an environmental gem on the Bergamasque coast of Sebino. Formed around 220 million years ago, it offers stratified limestones, Dolomia Principale, fossil ripples, and unique geological landscapes. Panoramic trails wind through forests and vertiginous cliffs, providing a full immersion into local flora and fauna.
Orridi of Uriezzo and the Giant’s Kettles – near Lake Maggiore
Canyons and pools uniquely shaped by glacial and river erosion. The Giant’s Kettles, circular cavities carved by rotating pebbles, tell stories of water and time. Some orridi remain active, like Balmasurda, where the Toce stream continues its erosive work, creating spectacular natural scenes. All visits are accompanied by professional geological guides.
