Villa D’Azeglio, Cannero Riviera
Built from the summer of 1856, this superb residence was chosen as a home on Lake Maggiore by the famous politician and patriot Massimo d’Azeglio, promoter of the unity of Italy (famous for the phrase “Made Italy, you must make the Italians”). D’Azeglio chose it to spend periods of tranquility away from the city life. The building was called a “Carthaginian spring” and d’Azeglio wrote to his nephew Emanuele that it would be a place where he could take refuge suddenly, if he had been forced to “give a kick to human greatness”.
Villa d’Azeglio covers over 1,000 square meters and has direct access to Lake Maggiore. It is immersed in a 9,000 square meter park with secular plants, natural springs and fountains. The villa is surrounded by a vast park (about seventy hectares) rich in secular plants (linden, beech, cedar of Lebanon), at one time it was a real kingdom of flora all covered with hydrangeas lovingly cultivated by Catherine Ferrandi (1856 1940) wife of Raffaello Faraggiana who had inherited the lakehouse after his father’s death.
Villa Henfrey Branca, Baveno
